What is spam?
Spam is unsolicited commercial email, generally sent to a mailing list or newsgroup. The
keyword here is unsolicited. If you and 500 other people receive an email advertisement
from some organization you've never heard of, consider yourself spammed. On the other
hand, if you receive a "special offer" email from the travel site where you bought a
plane ticket last week, that's not spam.
What is unsolicited commercial email?
This is how VStone Technology officially defines spam. You are sending spam if you:
- Send an email that (1) is addressed to someone that you do not have an existing business or personal relationship with, and (2) is not sent at the request of or with the express consent of the recipient.
- Send unsolicited email that could be expected, in VStone's discretion, to provoke complaints. For example, emails inviting people to participate in pyramid schemes or "get rich quick" schemes, or offers of pornography.
- Send email with petitions for signatures or any chain mail-related materials.
- Send unsolicited email without identifying in the email a clear and easy means to unsubscribe from your mailing list.
- Send email that conceals your identity, your return address, or the email address of origin.
- Use the VStone service to violate another Internet Service Provider's acceptable use policy and/or terms of service.
- Post messages to online forums or newsgroups that violate the rules of the forums or newsgroups.
Why is spam bad?
Spamming is considered a bad business practice, as people find it offensive and an invasion of privacy. More importantly, sending
spam is a violation of VStone's Service Agreement, which everyone must agree to when they sign up with us.
